Religious freedom, guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, is a cherished freedom of all Canadians and Americans. However, in the United States, many who oppose equal rights for LGBT people are using a warped concept of religious freedom to create for themselves a right to discriminate.
As LGBT people are gaining civil rights protections and equality across the country, so-called “Religious Freedom Restoration Acts” are being used across the United States to defeat these gains and codify discrimination in state laws, allowing businesses and government employees to deny LGBT people access to basic rights and services.
Want to know more about the “Religious Freedom Restoration Act” in Indiana and why Disciples threatened to hold our future General Assembly elsewhere? Want to learn more about how different versions of this law are appearing in other states throughout the US, and what their affect might be on both religious liberty and persons in LGBT communities? Then join us Saturday night after opening worship as the Disciples Justice Action Network (DJAN), in partnership with the Disciples Center for Public Witness, co-hosts an aftersession with GLAD dealing with these questions.
Special conversation leaders will be Rev. Dr. Todd Adams, Associate General Minister and Vice-President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and Rev. Steven Baines, Disciples minister in leadership at Americans United for Separation of Church and State.
This event is co-sponsored by the Disciples Justice Action Network (DJAN) and the GLAD Alliance.
