Transparent Closet at FCC Katy
contributed by Dr. LaTayna Purnell
When a father wanted the church to affirm and support his son as he transitioned, FCC Katy opened a space to address a critical need. Transparent Closet was born out of love and acceptance.
“Transparent Closet is a FREE clothing boutique designed for trans and exploring teens, youth and young adults to choose clothing in a safe environment. When you come to the closet you will be welcomed into a space just for you. Here you will find all kinds of clothes, undergarments, shoes, hair accessories, style accessories, make-up and more.”
Generous donations and collaboration with community groups like PFLAG have enabled FCC Katy to create this space where individuals can be themselves and are welcome to return as needed, regardless of whether home is affirming of their gender expression.
The grand opening for Transparent Closet has long been delayed because of the pandemic, and the plan is to reschedule it for the near future. Senior Pastor Rev. Heather Patricia Tolleson said, “If one person can use this service to be whole then it is worth it.”
Open & Affirming ministries live out their welcome in a range of ways. How are you welcoming and affirming all? What needs are in your community?
