Poem for Club Q from AllianceQ member
by Darlene Brewer
I remember my first time at a gay bar,
the freedom in the room,
the pulse of the music,
the room for everyone to be themselves.
I think that’s what Jesus was about so I think he would be there today if he were walking our streets.
To feel the acceptance in the room,
to let people know they were loved and celebrated just as they are,
to let go and to dance and shake out the devils of self-judgment.
People are still being crucified,
simply for who they are, named as targets, rejected and scorned.
And maybe Jesus would have started up a conversation with someone to remind them of their worth in the eyes of God and how much he liked their dance moves.
Bodies are now broken.
Blood is now shed.
Once again God is crucified.
I know Jesus was there with them, in their anxiety and fear when their worlds fell apart;
To whisper to them that their bodies and their blood, their places of gathering and their places of belonging, were sacred to God.
I believe Jesus was with them, every step on the dance floor, every last moment when hell arrived on earth.
No more hate.
