Movie Review: Normal
Emmy Award winning Normal, starring Jessica Lange and Tom Wilkinson, is a sweet, moving, and honest portrayal of a Midwestern working class family coming to terms with their new reality when their father and husband Roy lets it be known that inside is a woman who has been trapped in a man’s body and begins the transition to becoming Ruth. The story revolves around relationships with church, spouse, children and work as Roy becomes Ruth.
The script is well written, poignant without being sappy, communicating its message without apology, neither preachy nor didactic. The acting is superb. This movie is highly recommended for anyone wishing to understand more about the lives of transgender people and would be an excellent discussion starter for a Sunday School class or church study group.
