GLAD's 2014 Membership Drive: Accept the Challenge
The GLAD Alliance Council has renewed its commitment to expanding justice and welcome in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) by announcing a new Strategic Vision to focus its work for the upcoming biennium and a membership drive to increase support for this work.
The Strategic Vision focuses on increasing the number of Open & Affirming ministries in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), educating and supporting the Open & Affirming ministries in the pastoral care of LGBT persons, and empowering the Open & Affirming ministries to respond to justice issues.
There are many exciting ways that Disciples Open & Affirming congregations are responding to their commitment to welcome and justice:
- Several Disciples congregations providing safe space for local youth who are experiencing bullying.
- A Disciples congregation in Arizona proclaiming its Open & Affirming understanding of the Gospel in response to state legislative attempts to make discrimination legal in the name of faith.
- A Disciples congregation in Missouri holding a fundraiser cabaret to assist in the medical costs of a transgender members’ transition.
- A Disciples faith community in Ohio reaching out to the homeless by teaching knitting classes in the local homeless shelter.
- A Disciples congregation in California providing space for the local transgender coalition to meet.
The Alliance Council also set ambitious goals to bring more welcome to more corners of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). GLAD is working to increase the number of Open & Affirming congregations to 5% of all congregations in the church by the 2015 General Assembly, and to 20% of all Disciples congregations by the 2017 General Assembly.
More information about the membership drive and how to participate can be found here.
In order to enable the GLAD Alliance to meet these goals, the Alliance announces a membership drive with the goal of 500 GLAD members by August of this year. GLAD is challenging Open & Affirming congregations to recruit at least 10% of their membership as GLAD members and calling upon individuals to renew their GLAD memberships and encourage their friends, family, and other church members to join also.
