Dr. Katy E. Valentine, Disciples pastor, New Testament scholar, and trans* ally, has been working on projects related to gender identity — specifically transgender identity — and the Bible.
In her new blog, TransFriendlyBible, Dr. Valentine shares her work on gender switching in ancient times along with her interest in developing strategies and methods for the everyday trans* person to read the Bible for inspiration on their spiritual journey. “Our gender journey is inherently spiritual,” she shares.
Transgender identity is in the public awareness at an unprecedented level these days. How can Transgender Christians see their story reflected in the biblical text? TransFriendlyBible aims to do just that. The blog explores gender variance in the ancient world and in Scripture. It turns out that the ancient world is full of a lot of interesting examples of gender switching and sometimes even gender playfulness.
The blog also develops resources for Trans Christians and allies to read the Bible inspirationally. Here’s an excerpt from a recent entry:
“When we read the story of the Transfiguration using a Trans* lens, we can see that the changes that occur to Jesus similarly to many transgender persons. When we live into our gender identity — including corporeal/physical changes — we also catch glimpses of our gloriously resurrected bodies. Gender identity, including our inward and outward bodies, is part of the spiritual journey.”
Katy is also talking to lots of Transgender and gender creative Christians to find out their stories. If you are interested in talking to her, visit the website and you’ll find all the contact information.
