Gilead Sabbath: For Global LGBTQ Justice
The Open & Affirming Ministry Program encourages all O&A congregations to engage in regular times of education on issues concerning those who are marginalized and excluded, and also celebration of their commitment to journey towards a welcome of all.
Observing a Gilead Sabbath sponsored by the Religious Institute is a great way for your congregation to do this.
Congregations have the opportunity to take a prophetic stand for global LGBTQ justice. Across the country, people of faith are coming together to help to end the injustices lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people face throughout the world by observing a Gilead Sabbath.
United in education, prayer, and advocacy, people of faith are breaking their silence and speaking out against the violence, persecution, and discrimination faced by LGBTQ people in African countries and across the globe. Grounded in their faith, they are calling for a world where all people are loved, their rights are secured, and their sexual and gender diversity is valued.
You are invited to join these prophetic religious voices for global LGBTQ justice. Observe a Gilead Sabbath by learning about the realities of LGBTQ people globally, holding a religious service, and/or engaging in social action. You can find more information and resources for your faith community here, and if you do observe a Gilead Sabbath, be sure to let the Religious Institute know about it here.
The Religious Institute is a multifaith organization dedicated to advocating for sexual health, education, and justice in faith communities and society.
