Workshops Hosted by AllianceQ at General Assembly

Two workshops hosted by AllianceQ will be presented at General Assembly in Des Moines this coming July:

TRANSGENDER 101 – the “T” in LGBT
Sunday, July 21, 1:30 – 2:50

Topics about transgender and gender non-conforming (GNC) people have been prominent in the news, in television and movies, and in public opinion. Should transgender people be banned from serving in the US military? Who gets to pick what bathroom or locker room transgender people use? What about teachers who refuse to call a student by their preferred name or their legal name? Can transgender people live normal, successful, and happy lives?

Whether you know and love any transgender/GNC people, or whether it’s all new to you, or you’re wondering what all the fuss is about, this workshop will provide basic facts and understanding for the personal and political aspects of transgender/GNC people in the world and in the church.

Presenter:

Robin Knauerhase
Moderator, Disciples LGBTQ+ Alliance and
Research Scientist (recently retired) Intel Corporation
Ms. Knauerhase is the first “out” transgender person to serve as AllianceQ Moderator.

TRANS PEOPLE, HUMAN STORIES
Sunday, July 21, 3:00-4:30

In 2008, only 8% of Americans reported that they had met a transgender person. Today, the figure is closer to 1 in 5, and we have begun to have trans and gender non-conforming (GNC) characters in movies and TV shows. Don’t be a statistic! Attend this workshop and get to know some of your Christian sibilngs who are trans and/or GNC.

In our time together, we’ll do a brief level-set about terminology, then introduce a panel of transgender and GNC people who will share a little about each of their journeys. Then we’ll create a “safe space” for questions from the audience — doing our best to answer whatever respectful questions the audience may have about trans/GNC experience.
