Video Tribute to Carol Blakley

At the Indianapolis General Assembly, the Alliance Q presented a video tribute to Carol Blakley at the Alliance Q Banquet on Sunday night. This tribute includes memories from Carol’s children and from Disciples who worked with her and benefited from her advocacy.

The event we remember most when the name Carol Blakley’s name is mentioned is that moment in Kansas City, 40 years ago at the 1977 General Assembly, when she stood at a speak-out microphone at the Assembly and read her son’s coming out letter to the entire church and called the church to begin speaking about the LGBTQ+ among us.

There is much else to remember about Carol, and indeed someone should research and document the history of her advocacy. For many members of the Alliance, however, Carol was an ever present maternal presence at Alliance events, a woman from Caldwell, ID, who stood with us.

You can view the video tribute on the Alliance Q Facebook page.

Carol passed from this life in October 2009.
