Pastor Laura Guy at Living Water Christian Church in Parkville, MO, sent us her reflection and pictures from the Disciples O&A presence at Kansas City Pride, and Pastor Tyler Heston at Country Club Christian Church in Kansas City, MO, sent his reflections on the O&A Team’s presence at Pride and at Proclaiming Pride, an interfaith Pride celebration.

Thank you to the AllianceQ Open & Affirming Ministry Team in the Greater Kansas City Region for this ministry!

– from Laura Guy:

The Kansas City O&A churches worked together on a Pride Booth at KC Pride Fest. It was our first year, so we tried several things to get people to come see us. Some of us tried wearing Free Mom Hugs t-shirts but there were so many others doing that. We didn’t get many requests for hugs. However, we also offered free rainbow temporary tattoos and they were a HUGE hit. We ran out in 2 hours. It was especially great because it was mostly teenagers who wanted them, and since we had water and clean sponges, we offered to apply them. This allowed us several minutes with each person, talking to them and gently touching them while we applied pressure to get the tattoo to stick. I experienced it in a very profound way as being incarnational love! We also offered a make-your-own-button station and that was very popular as well. Plus, Tyler Heston found some great flags on Amazon to make a backdrop for our booth!

– from Tyler Heston:

The booth was a profound way to share incarnation love. The tattoos and the buttons were great face-time (and touch-time with people) and were a hit all weekend through. It sounds like everyone there Saturday & Sunday found it meaningful, too.

Proclaiming Pride was a huge success. Though it went far beyond Disciples in KC, it wouldn’t have been possible with Disciples folk — and both of our regional ministers were in attendance. We had over 100 people show up altogether to listen to four storytellers (a poet, a storyteller/dancer, and two speakers) and engage in 5 different reflection stations. They were candle-lighting, a labyrinth, make your own pride flag, make your own pride button, and a letter-writing station writing prophetic letters to the next generation of queer folk.
