Goings on at Hilton Christian Church, Newport News, VA: Becoming a People of Grace and Welcome to All

Terrye Williams, Pastor of Hilton Christian Church, Newport News, VA, shared with us that their Elders have affirmed GA-1327 Becoming a People of Grace and Welcome to All with this resolution:

At the 2013 General Assembly of the Christian Church (DOC) in Orlando, Florida, the gathered assembly affirmed Resolution GA 1327, “Becoming a People of Grace and Welcome to All,” calling upon the Church to recognize itself as striving to become a people of grace and welcome to all God’s children; affirming that neither race, gender, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, nationality, ethnicity, marital status, physical or mental ability, political stance or theological perspective is grounds for exclusion from fellowship or service within the church; encouraging all expressions of the church as a people of grace and welcome to acknowledge their support for the welcome and hospitality to all.

Whereas Sense of the Assembly resolutions are not binding upon congregations, and whereas Hilton Christian Church is, and has been, in fact, already living into the reality of this resolution; the Elders of Hilton Christian Church bring this motion to the [congregation’s] General Board:

“Hilton Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), affirms GA1327, “Becoming a People of Grace and Welcome to All,” joining with supporting congregations throughout the denomination striving to be that place of welcome and grace in our community.”

One of the ways Hilton Christian Church is living out its welcome to all is by hosting a group called Navigators, a scouting group that is gardening behind the church and donating the vegetables they grow to local meal programs for the homeless.

Here are some pictures of their work:
