GA-1929 "An Invitation to Education for Welcoming and Receiving the Gifts of Transgender and Gender-Diverse People" Recommended for Adoption

GA-1929 “An Invitation to Education for Welcoming and Receiving the Gifts of Transgender and Gender-Diverse People” has been recommended by the General Board of the Christian Church for adoption by the 2019 General Assembly in Des Moines. You can read the full text of the resolution here. More below from Robin Knauerhase, Moderator of the AllianceQ Council (robin@disciplesallianceq.org).

Galileo Christian Church of Mansfield, TX, and the Disciples LGBTQ+ Alliance, along with more than 60 congregations from throughout the denomination, have sponsored resolution GA-1929 “An Invitation to Education for Welcoming and Receiving the Gifts of Transgender and Gender Diverse People”. The resolution calls on the church to “seek, share, and produce” educational resources and to “grow in the embodiment of God’s generous welcome” for transgender people and their families.

Given recent events in other Protestant denominations and in society at large, the Alliance hopes that this resolution will help the Christian Church (DoC) to become even more a place of refuge, comfort, and joy for this portion of society. AllianceQ Council member Eric Satchwill says, “To me, having a trans and gender diverse resolution means not having to wonder if I’m truly being valued in the church, or merely being tolerated. It empowers me to more fully embrace my faith and use my gifts in the service of God and all our siblings in Christ.”

We hope you will support this resolution and encourage delegates from your churches to vote in favor. Be on the lookout for more information from the Alliance in the next few months before we gather in Des Moines.
